Aurora by Cristi Puiu in Un Certain Regard

Romanian director Cristi Puiu is back in the Cannes Film Festival this year to present Aurora in Un Certain Regard, screened this morning at 11 am in the salle Debussy. This feature film is the second in the series, an ambitious saga dedicated to Bucharest.

At just 39, this is Cristi Puiu’s fifth time here on the Croisette. In his latest film, Aurora, in which he plays a supporting role, he tells the story of a wandering, that of Viorel. This divorced forty-something and father of two young girls has just quit his job as an engineer. Lost, he decides one morning to walk the streets of Bucharest. In search of what? He doesn’t know the answer yet.

Aurora is Cristi Puiu’s fourth feature film. His first film, Marfa si bani (Merchandise and Money), was presented in the Parallel Section in 2001. The director was then awarded the Un Certain Regard prize in 2005 for The Death of Mr. Lazarescu, the first in an ambitious project imagined by the director and dedicated to the city of Bucharest. Aurora is also part of this great saga, which should include no less than six films in total.
