Gaspar Noé explores cinema in Lux Æterna
Four years after Love, Argentine director Gaspar Noé returns to the Official Selection and Midnight Screening with his new surprise-filled film Lux Aeterna. A film as anticipated as it is mysterious, and viewed at the last minute by the Selection Committee, Lux Aeterna is a vibrant essay on respecting beliefs, the work of the actor, and the art of directing.
“While on a shoot, two actresses tell stories about witches, and not only that…” These two actresses who exchange lines in front of the camera of Gaspar Noé, each used to taking on disturbing roles, are: Charlotte Gainsbourg (Best Actress Award in 2009 for her role in Antichrist by Lars Von Trier) and Béatrice Dalle (Trouble Every Day by Claire Denis, Out Competition in 2001).
Also appearing is actor Karl Glusman (The Neon Demon by Nicolas Winding Refn), who already participated in Cannes in 2015 alongside Gaspar Noé for his leading role in the scandalous Love. Working alongside them is actor Félix Maritaud noted for his role in 120 Battements par minute (BPM(Beats per Minute)), In Compétition in 2017 and directed by Robin Campillo, a member of the Jury this year.
Less than a year after the release of his last film, Climax, and ten years after the In Competition selection of the sensational and electric Enter the Void, in addition to Irréversible (Irreversible), the electroshock of 2002, the uncompromising director casts a shroud of mystery and once again incites curiosity about Lux Aeterna, an essay on cinema, cinephilia, and on-set hysteria. With this brilliant and energetic medium-length film, Gaspar Noé, whose films leave no one indifferent, definitely intends (once again) to surprise the audience.
