When Giuseppe Garibaldi disembarked in Sicily, the family of Don Fabrizio, Prince of Salina, settles in his country mansion in Donnafugata. During the trip, Tancredi, the Prince’s favorite nephew, courts his cousin Concetta just for the sake of it. The girl asks father Perrone, priest of Donnafugata and spiritual counselor of the whole family, to inquire her father whether she could marry Tancredi. However, the Prinece refuses to give his consent. Moreover, Tancredi is in love with Angelica, the daughter of Donnafugata’s Mayor. Against his will, the Prince accepts the circumstances and at the elections his vote goes in favor of the Unity of Italy and against the Bourbon princes. Tancredi leaves to join his regiment and he writes his uncle to ask for Angelica Sedara’s hand.
