Japan’s first world-standard, full-color animated feature film was produced by
Toei Doga Studio (now Toei Animation), a company that was drawing considerable attention at the time not only in Japan, but also around the world. The movie was two years in the making, and employed state-of-the-art technology and a team of supremely talented staff, under the personal supervision of Toei president Hiroshi Okawa.
Its narrative is inspired by the famous Chinese folk tale “Legend of the White Snake,” a story of true love between Bai Niang, a white serpent who takes human form, and a young man named Xu Xian.
