Hailed as among the best of the decade, the 2019 Official Selection of the Festival de Cannes is still adding sparkle to the careers of the films it highlighted last May. Throughout the autumn, the Festival has been delighted at the haul of nominations and awards they have garnered, as it is with every success which strengthens the vocation it has devoted itself to year after year: to discover, share and support the film industry and to spread the love of cinema around the world.
THE PUBLIC WELCOMES THE SELECTION
Fifteen million: that is the current total number of admissions racked up by the 2019 Official Selection in French theatres: a vote of confidence from the public which actually made Parasite by Bong Joon Ho the most viewed Palme d’or in France in 15 years with 1,686,488 admissions. [Learn more]
The Official Selection films which topped one million admissions in France, also include: Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood by Quentin Tarantino (2,633,053 admissions), the closing film, The Specials, by Eric Toledano and Olivier Nakache (2,026,243), the winner of the Grand Prix, Les Misérables, by Ladj Ly (1,363,410), and La Belle Époque (1,209,325) by Nicolas Bedos.
It's worth noting that in their countries of origin, the Official Selection films also achieved record admissions, in particular the In Competition film by Diao Yinan, The Wild Goose Lake, which brought in four million viewers in just three days of business in China.

INTERNATIONAL PRIZES AND NOMINATIONS
As of February, the films from the 2019 Official Selection had already picked up 639 Prizes and 1,300 nominations on the world tour of festivals, awards and rankings, where the 72nd Festival de Cannes was particularly well represented.

Four of the five films in the running for the Golden Globe for the best foreign language film are Cannes 2019 award-winners: Parasite by Bong Joon Ho, Pain and Glory by Pedro Almodóvar, Les Misérables by Ladj Ly and Portrait of a lady on fire by Céline Sciamma.

Once Upon A Time… In Hollywood by Quentin Tarantino: Golden Globes for best motion picture – musical or comedy and best screenplay and Golden Globe for best performance by an actor in a supporting role for Brad Pitt.
Rocketman by Dexter Fletcher: Golden Globe for best actor – musical or comedy for Taron Egerton and Golden Globe for best original song for "I'm Gonna Love Me Again".
► 27 NOMINATIONS AT THE CRITICS' CHOICE MOVIE AWARDS: the awards ceremony took place on 12 January.
The five films nominated for the Best Foreign Film were all prizewinners at the 72nd Festival: Parasite by Bong Joon Ho, Les Misérables by Ladj Ly, Pain and Glory by Pedro Almodóvar, Atlantics by Mati Diop and Portrait of a lady on fire by Céline Sciamma.

► 23 GOYA AWARDS NOMINATIONS: the awards ceremony took place on 25 January.
Pain and Glory by Pedro Almodóvar has 16 nominations, while Border by Ali Abbasi (Un Certain Regard Award 2018), Les Misérables by Ladj Ly and Portrait of a lady on fire by Céline Sciamma are nominated for the Best European Film Goya Award.
Update on 27/01 – Pedro Almodóvar’s Pain and Glory takes home the prize!
The 34th Goyas saw Pedro Almodovar’s Pain and Glory triumph in seven of the most important categories: best picture, best director, best original screenplay, best actor, best supporting actress, best editing and best original music.
Ladj Ly’s Les Misérables took home the Goya for best European film.
► 12 LUMIÈRES NOMINATIONS: the awards ceremony took place on 27 January.
Les Misérables by Ladj Ly, Portrait of a lady on fire by Céline Sciamma and Oh Mercy! by Arnaud Desplechin are at the top of the nominations list.
In the new award category for an international co-production, which celebrates the work of a French producer on the international scene, there are: Bacurau by Kleber Mendonça Filho and Juliano Dornelles, It Must Be Heaven by Elia Suleiman, Young Ahmed by Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne and Papicha by Mounia Meddour.

The international press once again hailed the quality of the films in the 2019 Selection at the 2020 Lumières Awards, by awarding them seven of the thirteen prizes up for grabs.
Les Misérables by Ladj Ly: Best film, Best screenplay, and Most promising actor for Alexis Manenti.
Portrait of a lady on fire by Céline Sciamma: Best cinematography for Claire Mathon and Best actress for Noémie Merlant
Oh Mercy! by Arnaud Desplechin: Best actor for Roschdy Zem
It Must be Heaven by Elia Suleiman: Best international co-production

These include, for best film: A Hidden Life by Terrence Malick, for first film: The Climb by Michael Covino and for best documentary: For Sama by Waad Al Kateab and Edward Watts.
Parasite by Bong Joon Ho, The Invisible Life of Eurídice Gusmão by Karim Aïnouz, Portrait of a lady on fire by Céline Sciamma and Les Misérables by Ladj Ly are nominated in the best foreign film category.
►PARASITE TAKES THE CROWN: THE 2019 PALME D'OR WINNER TRIUMPHS AT THE 2020 OSCARS!
After a record year for Cannes films, which gathered 22 nominations on the road to the Oscars [Find out more], the awards ceremony on February 9 was the coronation of the film Parasite.
The 2019 Palme d'or winner went down in history by collecting 4 Oscars: Best film, Best international film, Best director and Best original screenplay [Find out more]
Once Upon A Time… In Hollywood by Quentin Tarantino was awarded 2 Oscars: Best supporting actor for Brad Pitt and Best production design for Barbara Ling et Nancy Haigh.
And last but not least, Dexter Fletcher's Rocketman won the Oscar for the best original song for "I'm Gonna Love Me Again".
► CÉSAR AWARDS 2020: 63 nominations out of the 123 announced, across all categories. The awards ceremony took place on 28 February.
Among this year's most nominated are Les Misérables with 12 nominations, La Belle Époque with 11 nominations, Portrait of a lady on fire with 10 nominations, The Specials with 9 nominations and Oh Mercy! with 7 nominations.
Atlantics and Papicha join Les Misérables in the category for Best First Feature Film.
The Bears' Famous Invasion of Sicily and The Swallows of Kabul are competing for best animation.
The Cordillera of Dreams is nominated for Best Documentary Film.
Five out of the seven Cannes films are also up for the César for Best Foreign Film: Parasite, Pain and Glory, Young Ahmed, Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood and The Traitor.

Les Misérables, Ladj Ly's debut film, carried off the Césars for Best Film, the Audience Award, Best Editing, and Most Promising Actor, awarded to Alexis Manenti.
La Belle Epoque by Nicolas Bedos won the Césars for Best Original Screenplay and Best Production Design, as well as Best Supporting Actress for Fanny Ardant.
Papicha by Mounia Meddour was awarded the César for Best First Feature Film, and its star, Lyna Khoudri, won the César for Most Promising Actress.
Roschdy Zem was awarded the César for Best Actor for his role in Oh Mercy! by Arnaud Desplechin.
Claire Mathon won the César for Best Cinematography for her work on Portrait of a Lady on Fire by Céline Sciamma.
And finally, Parasite, the 2019 Palme d'or winner, was singled out once again for praise when it won the César for Best Foreign Film.
